CAUSES OF ACIDITY

1. Intake of incompatible food (Virudha anna)
2. Intake of contaminated food (Dushit anna)
3. Irregular diet
4. Intake of sour (amla) and spicy food.
5. Excessive drinking of tea ,coffee and drinks increasing pitta in abdomen.
6. Excessive drinking of alcohol
7. Smoking
8. Intake of non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs(Pain killers)
9. Common in patients suffering from liver disease especially cirrhosis of liver.
10. Due to helicobacter pyloric infection.
11. Intake of eatables which are fried and heavy in digestion.
12. Eating simple but more food than it’s capacity to digest.

In Ayurveda psychological factors like tension, anxiety,depression,anger etc are considered to trigger the onset of acidity.

TYPES OF ACIDITY

In Ayurveda Amalpitta(Acidity) has been described of two types

1.Urdhawaga Amalpitta (with upward pressure eg :oesophagitis)
2.Adhoga Amalpitta (with downward pressure effecting organs like pylorus, duodenum)

On the basis of imbalance of Doshas Amalpitta(Acidity) has been described of three types:

1.Due to increase of vataj dosha.
2.Due to increase of kaphaj dosha
3.Due to increase of both vataj and kaphaj doshas.

SYMPTOMS

Symptoms of Urdhawaga (upward) Amalpitta

• Vomiting of green, yellow, blue, black, slightly red or of bright red color having sour material that resemble mutton wash, sticky, thin, followed by kapha.
• Vomiting occurring during digestion of food or due to empty stomach with bitter or sour taste occasionally.
• Belching of similar nature.
• Burning sensation in the throat, chest and upper abdomen.
• Headache.
• Burning sensation in the palms and soles.
• Feeling of great heat.
• Loss of appetite.
• Fever of kapha pittaja type.
• Circular itching studded with numerous small vesicles on the skin.

Symptoms of Adhoga (downward) Amalpitta

• Thirst
• Burning sensation
• Fainting
• Giddiness
• Delusion
• Downward movement of different kinds of diarrhoea
• Occasional oppression in the chest
• Rashes on the skin
• Poor digestion
• Perspiration
• Yellowish skin

Symptoms of Amalpitta caused by Vata,Pitta & Kapha

• Tremors
• Delirium
• Fainting
• Feeling of pins and needles
• Weakness of body parts
• Pain and darkness before the eyes
• Giddiness
• Delusion

Symptoms of Amalpitta caused by Pitta

• Expectoration of thick phlegm
• Feeling of heaviness
• Lassitude
• Loss of appetite
• Coldness
• Weakness
• Vomiting
• Coating on the tongue
• Burning sensation
• Loss of strength
• Itching of the skin
• More sleep

Symptoms of Amalpitta caused by Kapha and Pitta both

• Eructation having bitter,Sour and pungent tastes
• Burning sensation in the chest upper abdomen and throat
• Giddiness
• Fainting
• Loss of appetite
• Vomiting
• lassitude
• Headache
• Salivation
• Sweet taste in the mouth

TREATMENT OF AMALPITTA(ACIDITY)

Medication recommended for Amalpitta (upward evacuation)

• Emesis with mild emetic drugs and downward evacuation with laxatives.
• After evacuation, purification of the body the patient should take snehapana and shaman chikitsa ahara should be administered.
• Anuvasana basti (or enema prepared with uncoctous substances and medicament).
• Sanshodhan Chikitsa in which all the three doshas are vitiated in amalpitta sanshodhan (evacuation).

Medication recommended for urdhawaga amalpitta (upward amalpitta)

• Vamana or emesis .

Medication recommended for Adhoga Amalpitta (downward amalpitta)

•virechana (or evacuation by purgatives and laxatives).

• For patients with dominance of kapha dosha, decoction of parval leaves, neem-leaves madanphala, honey and saindhav should be given for emesis or nishottar powder added with kwath should be given to a patient as a purgative.
• Edibles made of yava (barley) and godhuma (wheat) should be given to patients without salt, red chilli powder or sour and pungent in taste.
• Sugar and honey with Laja sattu should be regularly taken in diet.

Decoctions

• Decoction made up of shringver (ginger) and patol.
• Patol, nagar, dhanyak, kwath
• Decoction made up of patol, snagar, amrita and kutaka should be given in pitta-kapha dominant amlapitta
• Yava (barley), krishna and parval boiled with water should be taken added with honey should be taken in amalpitta.
• Dashanga Kwath
• Decoction of Amrita, Khadira, Yashtimadhu, Daruharidra should be taken added with honey
• Patoladi Kwath
• Guduchyadi Kwath
• Kantakaryadi Kwath
• Bhunimbadi Kwath

• Choorna

o Panchanimbadi
o Choorna Avipattikar
o Choorna Trikautkadya Choorna

• Madhu pippali yoga

o Pippali choorna with honey should be given in the morning.
o Eladi Choorna.

• Rasakalpa

o Suvarna sootshekhar rasa

• Ghrita
