In Ayurveda Diabetes has been described as “MADHUMEHA”


In todays world with increasing capacity of buying ,no time for preparing own meals and relying on fast food have increased the incidence of occurrence of Diabetes which increases many folds if tension,anxiety, and mental stress are also present.
In Ayurveda Diabetes has been described as Madhumeha which itself has been described under the heading Prameha which is classified into 20 types according to vitiation of doshas.Madhumeha is also one of the types of Prameha , all types of Prameha if not treated on time leads to Madhumeha.
According to Ayurveda disease occurs due to imbalance of sharirik doshas(vatta, pitta ,and kapha). Madhumeha occurs due to vitiation of Kapha dosha.
Madhumeha(Diabetes mellitus) is characterized by
-Excessive secretion and discharge of urine.
-Excessive thirst.
-Excessive intake of food at meals..
(1)Overintake of kapha dosha increasing diet.
(2)Poor activities & lack of exercise.
(3)Excessive sleep.
(4)Obese and overweight persons are more prone to Diabetes.
(5)Tension,mental stress and strain along with other causes lead to Diabetes.

(3)Sweetness in mouth
(4)Burning sensation in palms and soles
(5)Dryness of mouth and throat
(6)Increased hunger
(7)Skin infection
(8)Intense itching
(9)Constipation
(10 )Loss of weight
(11)Wounds take time to heal
(12)Weakness
When diabetes is not treated on time then coma ensues with weakness and sweet odour
of breath
1. Find the cause and eliminate it.
2. If patient is obese then sanshodan chikitsa (Purification of body) should be done.
3. If patient is lean and weak then sanshaman chikitsa should be done.
4. Proper cleanliness of the body should be done and physical activities including morning and evening walk should be done.
5. Sweets, potato, rice should be excluded from the diet.
6. Physical activities should be done under sun and in open air.
7. Diet should include katu tikat and kshay food.
Which ever of these is available should be used for preparing
swaras .10-20 grams twice a day should be taken.
