In Ayurveda Jaundice has been discussed as “kamla”.

Jaundice is a condition characterized by yellowness of
-skin
- sclera(whites of eyes)
-mucous membranes
-body fluids
due to deposition of bile pigment resulting from excess billirubinin the blood (hyperbilirubinemia)
According to Ayurveda jaundice is caused due to vitiation of pitta dosha which first effects the liver functioning after imbalanced dietary habits
Jaundice is caused due to following causes
1.obstruction of the bile ducts (by infection, tumor or gallstones)
2.viral hepatitis (hepatitis A, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, hepatitis D, and hepatitis E)
3.drug-induced cholestasis (bile pools in the gallbladder because of the effects of drugs)
4.drug-induced hepatitis (hepatitis triggered by medications, including erythromycin sulfa drugs, antidepressants, anti-cancer drugs, Aldomet, rifampin, steroids, chlorpropamide, tolbutamide, oral contraceptives, testosterone, propylthiouracil)
5.biliary stricture
6.alcoholic liver disease (alcoholic cirrhosis)
7.pancreatic carcinoma (cancer of the pancreas)
8.primary biliary cirrhosis
9.ischemic hepatocellular jaundice (jaundice caused by inadequate oxygen or inadequate blood flow to the liver)
10.intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (bile pools in the gallbladder because of the pressure in the abdomen with pregnancy)
11.hemolytic anemia
12.congenital disorders of bilirubin metabolism (Gilbert’s syndrome, Dubin-Johnson syndrome, Rotor’s syndrome)
13.chronic active hepatitis
14.autoimmune hepatitis

Complications from Jaundice (Kamala)
Jaundice itself is not a serious condition as most jaundices treat themselves on their own. However a proper investigation into the cause of jaundice is required. It could be a very serious disease like hepatitis that is causing the jaundice.
1.First of all sanehan should be given with panchgavya ghrita,mahatikatghrita or kalyan ghrita
2.After sanehan mild purgation should be given.
3.After sanehan swedan prashamn chikitsa should be given
4.To bring vitiated pitta dosha in kostha (abdomen) ruksha,tikta and katu herbs should be given
5.Juice of raddish or kulthi should be given with meals.
